Classic Persia connects Tehran, Kashan, Isfahan, Yazd and Shiraz in a southbound route through several of the country’s defining historical landscapes. The itinerary moves from the Qajar and modern layers of the capital to the garden houses of Kashan, the Safavid avenues and domes of Isfahan, the earthen architecture of Yazd and the Achaemenid legacy surrounding Shiraz.

Eight days is a compact timeframe for this route. It works best for travellers who are comfortable with purposeful travel days and early starts. The itinerary can be slowed down by adding nights in Isfahan, Yazd or Shiraz, and that is often the better choice for photography, food, craft or architecture-focused trips.

Suggested day-by-day route

Day 1 — Tehran: arrival and orientation

Begin with a flexible arrival day. Depending on flight time, the first walk may introduce central Tehran, a neighbourhood café or a concise museum visit. The priority is to recover from the journey, understand the route ahead and avoid overloading the first day.

Day 2 — Tehran to Kashan

Explore one carefully selected part of Tehran before travelling south. In Kashan, the focus shifts to courtyard houses, garden design and the relationship between architecture and the desert climate. An evening walk through the old quarter provides a quieter introduction than a checklist of every historic residence.

Days 3–4 — Isfahan

Isfahan deserves the deepest pause on the route. Naqsh-e Jahan Square brings together royal, commercial and religious architecture on an extraordinary urban scale. Separate time should be reserved for the bridges, the Armenian quarter of New Julfa and the bazaar, rather than attempting to compress them into one continuous visit. Sunset light changes the character of the square and riverfront, so the daily sequence should respond to season and weather.

Day 5 — Isfahan to Yazd

The overland journey reveals the transition toward Iran’s central plateau. Stops can be chosen according to interest: a smaller historic town, a caravanserai, a traditional workshop or simply more time in Yazd. The old city is most rewarding on foot, where windcatchers, shaded lanes and mud-brick walls explain how people adapted to heat and scarce water.

Day 6 — Yazd

Spend a full day understanding Yazd’s architecture and Zoroastrian heritage. Visits should be approached respectfully and with clear cultural explanation. Rooftop views and evening walks are valuable, but they should complement rather than replace the stories of water management, trade and community that shaped the city.

Day 7 — Yazd to Shiraz

This is a substantial travel day. Depending on the final design, the route may include Pasargadae on the approach to Shiraz or reserve the ancient sites for the next day. The plan should consider opening hours, heat and the amount of daylight rather than promising every possible stop.

Day 8 — Persepolis and Shiraz

Persepolis is the historical anchor of the journey. Time at the site should allow for the reliefs, ceremonial stairways and the broader political geography of the Achaemenid Empire. If departure timing permits, Shiraz can add a garden, poetic site or bazaar walk. Travellers continuing onward should consider an extra night so the final day does not become hurried.
